Bodegas Muga is Rioja Alta’s premier producer, and the Muga family are unanimously considered to be one of Spain’s most important winemaking families. The winery has practically legendary status due to its philosophy revolving around adherence to tradition and winemaking of the highest quality. Few producers in the world fashion wines that have such a sense of tradition and place as Muga. The wines of Muga have a distinct, unique and inimitable profile.
Bodegas Muga 'Prado Enea' Gran Reserva Rioja DOCa, Spain 2010
The Prado Enea is their flagship wine. A blend of Tempranillo, Grenache, Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano. The Prado Enea crop is always the last to be brought into the winery and is selected from plots located in the area of Villalba de Rioja, a recognized high-quality terroir. The grapes are fermented in oak vats without temperature control or addition of yeasts followed by at least 36 months in mainly French oak barrels. At the end of the aging period, the wine is lightly fined before being bottled and kept in their cellars for at least another 3 years.
Bodegas Muga Seleccion Especial Reserva Rioja DOCa, Spain Vertical 2004, 2005, 2006 (2 bottles of each )
Same composition as the Prado Enea, the Muga Selección Especial is the result of a selection of the finest grapes and finest wine produced of a “Reserva” classification at the winery, so it sees a bit less time in oak and bottle. After fermentation the wine is aged for 26 months, in new French oak barrels made in their own cooperage. The wine is bottled, after which it remains in their cellars for at least 18 months for further aging. The 2004 and 2005 were exemplary vintages, and 2006 wasn’t far behind.
