Brendan Stater-West Saumur Breze, Loire, France 2019

Brendan Stater-West is an American-born winemaker (from Eugene, Oregon) who has become one of the most exciting young names in the Loire Valley, Saumur—especially for Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc from top limestone sites like Brézé and La Ripaille. He didn’t come from a wine family. Brendan moved to France initially to teach English, then had a “lightbulb moment” after tasting the wines of Domaine Guiberteau in Paris. That experience pushed him to relocate to Saumur, where he essentially pursued Romain Guiberteau until he became his apprentice and assistant winemaker.

Saumur Brézé Blanc 2019 is a benchmark Loire Chenin Blanc from one of the region’s most exciting modern producers. Sourced from the legendary limestone slopes of Brézé, it delivers intense precision and purity with layers of lemon oil, green apple, white peach, and crushed stone minerality. The palate is taut, saline, and deeply structured, with electric acidity and a long, chalk-driven finish. Fermented and aged with a restrained, low-intervention approach, this is a serious, terroir-transparent white wine with both immediate energy and long aging potential Loire Chenin at its highest level.
