Domaine Dugat-Py Champ Gain Vieilles Vignes, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, France 2023
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru “Champ Gain Vieilles Vignes” 2023
This is one of Dugat-Py’s most distinctive white Burgundy bottlings, made from 100% Chardonnay. The Vieilles Vignes designation is important: the wine comes from mature vines in the Champ Gain climat, a high, limestone-rich site on the upper slopes of Puligny. Expect Dugat-Py’s characteristic combination of concentration and richness with Puligny’s precision, lemon curd, white peach, pear, toasted hazelnut, flowers and chalky minerality, with a broad, creamy palate and a long, saline finish. It has plenty of weight but retains good acidity and definition.
A rich, powerful and highly collectible Puligny for someone who likes serious, old-vine white Burgundy. Compared with the Les Folatières 2023, I’d expect Champ Gain VV to be denser, more powerful and more structured, while Folatières is a little more open and aromatic.
