Saint-Joseph 2023 is a beautifully classical expression of Northern Rhône Syrah, showcasing the granite driven character of the appellation with precision and depth. It opens with aromas of black cherry, cassis, violet, and cracked pepper, layered with graphite, olive, and crushed stone. The palate is medium- to full-bodied, textured and focused, with fine tannins and a vibrant mineral core that brings both freshness and structure. More approachable than Hermitage but still unmistakably Chave, this is a refined, terroir-driven Syrah that balances dark fruit, savory complexity, and elegance offering immediate appeal with the ability to age gracefully over the next decade.

Oh my god. Wow. The nose is just... it's intoxicating. It hits you instantly with this beautiful, pure core of black raspberry and crème de cassis. But it doesn't stop there. Then comes the complexity. You get that signature Northern Rhône Syrah blueprint of crushed black peppercorns, smoked game, black olives, and this incredibly distinct, fresh violaceous floral note. It’s not masked by heavy, clumsy oak. It’s raw. It’s transparent. It smells exactly like the granite hillside it came from.

​The texture on the palate is magnificent. The fruit is dense and beautifully concentrated, but it is completely light on its feet. Why? Because the acidity is laser-focused. It lifts that rich blackberry fruit and carries it effortlessly across the tongue. The tannins are fine-grained, chalky, and incredibly well-integrated. They have grip, but they aren't aggressive. They hold the wine together like a beautifully tailored suit. It's powerful, it's elegant, and the balance is spot on.
​And the finish? It just goes on, and on, and on. Beautifully savory, with lingering notes of licorice, iron, and woodsmoke. Bottom line.. stunning.
