Domaine Nicolas Rossignol Santenots, Volnay Premier Cru, France 2020
A 5th generation winemaker in his family, Nicolas Rossignol is a perfect example of how a newer generation of vintners in Burgundy have brought tradition and knowledge from the past into the future. To better understand vinification after his studies, he worked at various wineries you may have heard of such as Louis Latour, Vieux Telegraphe, and and Chateau Cardonne, as well as Domaine Boschendal in South Africa. He returned to Burgundy in 1994 and now produces exceptionally beautiful wines in Volnay and Pommard by balancing the elegance and power of all his different vineyards.
Dense and intense from the beginning with some animal notes those other wines don’t have. Subtle on the palate, (old vines) relayed by length and strength in the mouthfeel. It is more on the Côte de Nuits than on the Côte de Beaune side.
"A ripe yet cool nose also features an abundance of spice elements along with notes of poached plum, warm earth and a whiff of the sauvage. The larger-scaled, concentrated and intensely mineral-driven flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract that helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine shaping the hugely long finale.
