Figli Luigi Oddero 'Convento', Barolo DOCG, Italy 2018
Oddero farms an impressive 35 hectares of Nebbiolo di Barolo, historically selling some in bulk while reserving top sites for its Barolo “Tradizionale.” In standout vintages, they now bottle a second wine for us—“Convento,” mostly from La Morra parcels and named for the estate’s 17th-century convent origins. Made exactly like the “Tradizionale,” it ferments naturally with a long maceration and ages two years in large Slavonian casks. Convento leans into purity and lift, offering clear mineral drive and an ethereal, savory perfume—classic, traditional Barolo without any oak-derived imprint.
Walter Speller writes: from Vignarionda, Scarrone and Rive in La Morra. Just mid ruby and lustrous. A very pretty but shy nose of cherry stones with a peppery tingle and a hint of red bell pepper. Super-elegant palate with a fine yet firm structure. Exceptional for this level. Drinking 2022 - 2028. -Jancis Robinson 17++
