Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Gold Kapsel, Mosel, Germany 2018

Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Gold Kapsel 2018 is one of the great collectible sweet Rieslings of the Mosel. Prüm owns about five hectares of the legendary Wehlener Sonnenuhr, whose steep, south-southwest-facing gray slate slopes give these wines extraordinary perfume, minerality, and longevity. The Gold Kapsel represents a particularly selective, concentrated bottling. The 2018 is remarkably dense yet weightless, showing ripe stone fruit, quince, honeyed fig, citrus, floral notes, tea, spice, and slate, with tremendous acidity carrying the sweetness through an exceptionally long, saline finish. It received 99 points from James Suckling, 97 from Wine Advocate, and 96 from Vinous. For a collector, this is a serious long-term cellar wine. The 2018 is still youthful and should develop beautifully for decades.
