Nicolas Carlin Sancerre Manoline, Loire, France 2024

"Nicolas Carlin didn't come from wine. He grew up in Paris and studied software, but his heart was always in the Loire. His family had a house in Crezancy-en-Sancerre, and every summer he'd escape the city to intern in the vines with family friends, eventually landing at Domaine de la Voltonnerie, run by Jack Pinson — who also happens to be his future father-in-law. That connection led him to leave tech behind and study enology in Beaune. Not long after, he joined the cellar full time.
A bright, expressive Sauvignon Blanc grown on clay-limestone slopes just outside the village of Sancerre. It opens with a clean nose of citrus—lime, grapefruit, and green apple layered with white flowers, fresh herbs, and a touch of flinty minerality. On the palate, it's crisp and vibrant, showing sharp citrus, green melon, and subtle grassy notes. The acidity is medium-plus, giving the wine lift and structure, while a long, mineral-driven finish keeps it focused and refreshing. This is classic Loire Valley Sancerre, built for oysters, grilled fish, goat cheese, and summer evenings.
