Vieilles Vignes Verzenay Grand Cru Extra Brut 2021 is a distinctive and terroir-driven Champagne that showcases the elegance and mineral intensity of Pinot Noir from the Grand Cru village of Verzenay. Sourced from old vines planted in the village’s chalk-rich soils, this limited-production cuvée reflects the cooler, more structured personality of Verzenay, offering a compelling counterpoint to the broader, richer expressions found elsewhere in the Montagne de Reims. The 2021 vintage reveals aromas of red currant, wild strawberry, crisp apple, blood orange, white flowers, and crushed stone, layered with subtle notes of brioche, almond, and spice from extended lees aging. On the palate, it is vibrant and finely detailed, combining a delicate mousse with bright acidity, precise fruit, and a pronounced chalky minerality that drives the wine through a long, saline finish. Bottled with an Extra Brut dosage, the wine is focused, energetic, and exceptionally transparent to its origin, making it a superb example of site specific grower Champagne. While Ambonnay and Bouzy are often associated with power and richness, Verzenay is prized for producing Pinot Noir with greater tension, finesse, and mineral precision. This bottling beautifully captures that character, offering a more linear and structured expression that will reward both immediate enjoyment and extended cellaring.
