Riise 'Jovian', Paso Robles, USA 2021
A powerful, compelling red from RIISE, the Paso Robles project founded by Juan Mercado, the visionary behind cult Napa producer Realm Cellars. Jovian puts Tempranillo front and center, blending Old World character with the concentration and polish of California. The nose unfolds with black cherry, blackberry, sandalwood, graphite and savory herbs, while the full bodied palate delivers layers of dark fruit, warming spice and earthy minerality. Aged for 26 months in French oak, this is a structured, deeply textured wine with firm yet refined tannins and a long, persistent finish.
"The 2021 Jovian is a different beast with its Tempranillo-dominated nose of red and black fruits, spice, sandalwood, and peppery herb-driven aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied red that's concentrated, has a pure, layered mouthfeel, tons of ripe tannins, and a great, great finish. It needs 4-5 years of bottle age but will cruise for 15-20 years in cold cellars. The blend is 65% Tempranillo, 15% Petit Sirah, 15% Grenache, and the rest Syrah, from the Four Hearts, Paderewski, Full Draw, and ONX Vineyards, and it was completely destemmed and spent 26 months in 60% new French oak."
