The Wittmann family has been growing grapes and producing wine in the small Rheinhessen village of Westhofen since 1663. Today, the estate cultivates 62 acres of vines in the rolling limestone hills found in the southern part of the region, just west of the Rhine river valley. They have been pioneers in developing the full-bodied, well-balanced style of dry wines for which the region has become known. And they were early adopters of organic (1990) and biodynamic (2004) viticulture.

VDP.GROSSE LAGE denotes Rheinhessen's highest-quality vineyards, each precisely demarcated by parcel. Wines grown in Grosse Lage sites are notable for their extraordinary sense of place and cellarability. The KIRCHSPIEL opens up toward the Rhine like an ancient amphitheater, ready to bask in the first morning ravs of sunshine. The vinevards face from east to southeast. protected against the west winds and creating the outstanding microclimate for which the Kirchspiel is known. Our vines are primarily planted in the upper portion of the site, at inclines of up to 30%.

The soils are mainly clayey marl with limestone deposits, joined by limestone weathering clay that lend the KIRCHSPIEL its distinctive, spicy-elegant character.

"The incredible tension between the flinty and foral aspects of this wine makes it remarkably energetic for a dry riesling with this level of concentration.", Stuart Pigott
