Patrick Piuze Chablis:
Patrick Piuze arrived in Burgundy from Montreal Canada in 2000 to work the harvest with Olivier Leflaive. What started as a one month internship, turned into what has now become one of the more exciting Chablis producers in many years. After less than 3 weeks working with him, Olivier Leflaive recognized the talent the young Piuze had and offered him the opportunity of a lifetime by asking Patrick if he wanted to head up the new winery in Chablis he was building. For 4 years Patrick made the Chablis of Leflaive, then for 1 year he produced the Chablis at Verget, and finally he was winemaker at Jean‐Marc Brocard for 3 years. With so much knowledge and experience in the appellation, it was time for Patrick to go off on his own, which he did beginning with the 2008 vintage.
After many years of working with so many terroirs in Chablis, Patrick has developed not only a great knowledge of the appellation’s vineyards, but also great relationships with many of its best growers. Through this network, Patrick sources some of the top sites in Chablis including six 1er Crus and six of the seven Grand Crus.
Domaine Marc Colin et Fils En Montceau Saint-Aubin Premier Cru, France 2018
Marc Colin has now handed over this leading St-Aubin domaine to three of his children, Damien, Joseph and Caroline.
The Domaine is much better known for its white wines. These include no less than eight bottlings of premier cru St-Aubin plus Puligny- and Chassagne-Montrachet and their associated grands crus. The Marc Colin Montceau is a remarkable wine.
Domaine Sylvie Esmonin Clos Saint-Jacques Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, France 2018
Sylvie's grandfather worked for the Comte de Moucheron, former sole owners of the great Clos St Jacques vineyard. When the Comte had to sell up, he bought a portion of the vineyard along with his house. Michel Esmonin, Sylvie's father, helped to develop the domaine, but sold the wines mostly in bulk. Sylvie came back to help her father on the condition that everything was bottled at the domaine, and she is now in sole charge.
The wines are extremely stylish with typical Gevrey firmness but displaying also a silky elegance. She is one of only five producers to make Clos Saint-Jacques, which is widely believed to be one of the best wines in all of Burgundy. This wine is terrific value compared to some of the contemporaries that produce wines from this vineyard.
